Some things I wanted to tell you

A major software update     Sven Boris Schreiber  ♦  06-27-2010
I didn't update this site for a couple of weeks due to lack of time, since some other activities of mine required much attention. Moreover, after creating 19 athlete profiles, I've come to the conclusion that my content management system wasn't suited quite well for this kind of content. Creating and updating profiles was clumsy and error-prone and really wasn't fun at all, so I decided to stop at this point and add optimized content management procedures for this special task. Because I've already got some sort of athlete profiles in my biathlon database, it seemed logical to me to add the required features to this database module.

I've done all programming and administrative work this weekend, and after migrating the existing profiles to the new system, I can say that it really was a good idea. Adding a new profile or updating an older profile is a snap now. Even better, some profile data is updated automatically whenever some athlete parameters change in subsequent IBU result tables. Surname changes for instance, which are occasionally observed in women's biathlon, don't constitute a problem anymore, since the IBU supplies all necessary data in its online athlete database.

The drawback of the change is that all previous addresses of the athlete profiles have become invalid, and it will take some time until Google and other sites, which store web page addresses, will update them. Now the profile pages don't have individual topic IDs anymore, but rather are adressed by the common topic ID 3, with the item ID parameter specifying the selected athlete. For instance, the athlete ID of Svetlana Sleptsova is 1, so her profile is addressed by the link http://www.visual-biathlon.com/?topic=3&item=1. Otherwise, there aren't any significant visual changes caused by the software update, except that it's possible now to browse the athlete directory both by nation as before, and now by name as well.
  It's done (I think)     Sven Boris Schreiber  ♦  04-04-2010
Well... I guess I can say now that Version 1.0 of "Visual Biathlon" is finished! Today I did some final programming on my K-Plan content management system, in order to make the content maintenance of the web site more convenient, and I added a couple of athlete profiles and photo collections. It's still a fairly raw draft of what I have in mind with this site, but I think you can feel by now what it's going to be. From now on, its essential task is to grow and grow and grow and grow and grow.

My new "Visual Biathlon" web site starts to breathe! Today I did all the artwork, installed my K-Plan content management system, and added some rudimentary content. Please stay tuned...
